January 2016 is National Radon Action Month

Last Updated: Thursday, January 21, 2016

Radon is a naturally-occurring gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation.

Your home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. 1 in 15 homes across the U.S. has elevated radon levels.

Radon tests can be performed at home easily and for little cost. Tioga County Public Health Department's Healthy Neighborhoods Program can supply a radon test kit for free as part of a free home safety check!
