School Choice Week began in Nevada and across America this Sunday, with the goal of raising awareness about the options that parents have for their children's education.

The Week will feature 241 events and activities across the Silver State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. In addition, a celebration is planned on Tuesday, January 23 at the UNLV Campus in Artemus Ham Hall.

Nationwide, 32,240 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 21-27, 2018), and nearly 7 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

The Week brings attention to the different education environments that are available for Nevada’s 664,000 children. For example, families in Nevada can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The state also offers a private school choice program and tuition-free, public online schooling.

The city of North Las Vegas has issued a proclamation recognizing School Choice Week in their community.

“School Choice is important, especially in Nevada. The options can be very eye opening to parents and students. We choose our school and our students learn that and begin to understand why it is so important during our NSCW events,” said Brooke Blakeley, care and communications coordinator at Lake Mead Christian Academy, a private school serving 770 people in grades K to 12 in Henderson, Nevada.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

“When it comes to school choice, Nevada has made great strides over the last ten years toward providing parents with additional and better education options for children,” said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week. “National School Choice Week is a time to raise awareness about those options so that more Nevada families can match their children up with education environments that meet their needs.”
