Monthly change
Food prices fell 0.8 percent in the December 2015 month. After seasonal adjustment, food prices fell 0.5 percent.
In December 2015 compared with November 2015:
- Fruit and vegetable prices rose 1.5 percent (up 1.2 percent after seasonal adjustment).
- Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 2.7 percent.
- Grocery food prices fell 0.6 percent (down 0.3 percent after seasonal adjustment).
- Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 3.4 percent.
- Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.3 percent.
Annual change
Food prices decreased 1.3 percent in the year to December 2015.
From December 2014 to December 2015:
- Fruit and vegetable prices increased 2.4 percent.
- Meat, poultry, and fish prices decreased 3.8 percent.
- Grocery food prices decreased 3.0 percent.
- Non-alcoholic beverage prices decreased 2.3 percent.
- Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices increased 2.0 percent.
Average prices
- The average price for a kilogram of chicken breasts was $14.62 in December 2015, compared with $16.60 in December 2014.
- The average price of the cheapest available 2 litres of blue-top milk was $3.13 in December 2015, compared with $3.64 in December 2014.
