Unseasonably warm spring temperatures across much of Canada led many golf courses to open earlier than usual in 2012. This warmth, followed by good summer weather, contributed to the 6.3% increase in their operating revenue, from $2.4 billion in 2011 to $2.5 billion in 2012. Operating expenses also increased from $2.4 billion in 2011 to $2.5 billion in 2012, a 5.6% increase. As a result, operating profit margins increased from 1.4% in 2011 to 2.1% in 2012.

The ski industry at the national level remained relatively stable in 2012. Growth in British Columbia and Alberta was offset by declines in all the other provinces. British Columbia and Alberta continued to benefit from the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, which provided improved infrastructure such as better roads and new ski lifts, as well as expanded media coverage that raised the profile of the ski industry. Overall, operating revenue for the ski industry increased almost 1%, from $967.4 million in 2011 to $976.0 million in 2012.

Operating revenue for fitness facilities and recreational sport centres increased 6.2% to $2.4 billion. Increased operating revenue was mainly the result of both the expansion of existing operations and from new companies entering the industry.

Operating revenue for the "Other amusement and recreation industry" group, which includes golf courses and country clubs, ski facilities, fitness facilities and recreational sports centres, marinas, bowling lanes, and other amusement and recreational companies, increased 5.3% to $7.9 billion.

The amusement park and arcade industry earned operating revenue of $472.9 million in 2012, up 3.3% from 2011. The industry's operating expenses declined 6.5% to $384.6 million in 2012.
