The data will be presented by Benjamin Sun, MD, a board-certified thoracic surgeon and one of SpecialtyCare’s surgeon partners at Allina Health. Also participating will be research co-author, Samuel Weinstein, MD, MBA, SpecialtyCare’s Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, who said, “We’re excited to share our findings with the medical community. What we’ve learned about prime volume equipment and its influence on intraoperative blood transfusion is unique and has the potential to influence common perfusion practice.”

Based on SpecialtyCare data from more than 50,000 isolated, first-time coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures from 190 different facilities between April 2012 and May 2015, the research reveals valuable insights on the variables that impact intraoperative red blood cell (RBC) transfusion.

SpecialtyCare’s Chief Executive Officer, Melvin F. Hall, PhD, added, “The SpecialtyCare database contains information on the 350,000 procedures we participate in each year in over 1,000 hospitals. This new research on RBC transfusion exemplifies the power of that rich data mine and the value of the clinical insights we’re able to provide. With both clinical and statistical expertise, our Medical Office is uniquely positioned to advance patient outcomes as well as the efficiency and quality of healthcare by sharing research and best practices with our clinicians, customers, and healthcare leaders all across the industry.”
