Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire founder of Las Vegas Sands Corp. and a major donor to the Republican Party, has died, according to the company.

Mr. Adelson passed away Monday night due to complications related to treatment for non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Las Vegas Sands said in a statement Tuesday. He was 87.

A funeral for Mr. Adelson will be held in Israel, where his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson was born, and a memorial service is planned for Las Vegas, according to the company.

Last week, Mr. Adelson stepped away from his chairman and chief executive roles at his casino company for cancer treatment.

His family held about 57% of the company behind properties in Las Vegas and the gambling hub of Macau. In 2019, the company disclosed that Mr. Adelson was being treated for cancer.

Mr. Adelson and his wife have been among the top donors to the Republican Party. They donated more than $75 million to President Trump's unsuccessful re-election campaign, The Wall Street Journal recently reported.

When Mr. Adelson stepped away from his executive roles at Las Vegas Sands last week, the company said Robert Goldstein would serve as acting chairman and acting chief executive of the company and a unit tied to China.
