Fire crews responded to house fire (9900 block of SE Holgate) at 9:12 PM. They were met by heavy fire and smoke coming from the front of the structure. Firefighters quickly verified that all residents were out of the home and extinguished the fire. Crews are still on scene and an investigator has been called out to determine a cause and assess damage.

Fireplaces and chimneys are the number one source of home heating equipment fires.

- Keep kindling, paper, and decorations away from fireplaces and wood stoves.

- Never use gas or lighter fluid to start a fireplace or wood stove.

- Don't burn cardboard boxes, newspaper, or trash. They burn too hot and can cause a chimney fire.

- Have a service person inspect and clean your chimney or wood stove each year.
