The 26th annual Herbert H. Stark, M.D., Memorial Lecture, focused on anatomic principles in the modern care of disease and injury to the hand, will be held on January 25 in Los Angeles. The event is sponsored by the Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) and the Orthopaedic Institute for Children Foundation.

Featured guest lecturer will be Joseph Upton, M.D, professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. An internationally known leader in the field and a pioneer in free tissue transplant surgery, Dr. Upton presently serves as clinical professor of surgery and plastic surgery at Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospitals, Boston Children’s Hospital, Shriners Burn Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

The January 25 lecture is specifically designed for orthopaedic, plastic, hand and general surgeons as well as hand therapists and other healthcare providers interested in problems of the upper extremity. The course will discuss measures of evaluation, diagnostic criteria and techniques along with the results of related outcome studies.

The lectures are named in honor of Herbert H. Stark, M.D., an internationally known orthopaedic hand and upper extremity surgeon who devoted his professional life to the development and education of physicians interested in the surgery of the hand. Throughout his professional career Dr. Stark lectured extensively on the management of the problems of the hand, and his countless humanitarian services earned him many honors and awards from his community and the respect of both grateful parents and fellow physicians.

The lectures will be held in two sessions: a morning session at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica and an evening session at the OIC campus in downtown Los Angeles. There is no charge to attend, but donations may be sent to the Orthopaedic Institute for Children’s Foundation. Further information, including registration for the lecture, is obtained by contacting OIC’s medical education office at 213-742-1369 or by contacting Melissa Peters at MRPeters@mednet.ucla.edu.
