With a focus on improving safety and catering to increased traffic volumes, the team at MidCoast Council will soon commence works to widen and reconstruct a 620m section of Blackhead Road.

The works will be undertaken on either side of Federation Drive from Tuesday 30 January, and are expected to continue through to mid-April, weather permitting. The scope of works includes realigning and widening the road to 9 metres, constructing a turning lane from Blackhead Road into Federation Drive, sealing the road shoulders and providing a flatter road reserve or 'batter' area on both sides.

'This is the last section of Blackhead Road between The Lakes Way and Diamond Beach Road to be reconstructed, and will mean a much safer route for the hundreds of motorists who use this busy route on a daily basis', explained Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council's Manager, Projects and Engineering.

Road crews will establish the site from 30 January, and commence the project with two to three weeks of tree clearing to make way for the wider road pavement.

'This is a busy arterial road for our region, and while we acknowledge there will be disruption to traffic in the area, we've scheduled the works to avoid the busy holiday period', Rhett added.

Lane closures will be required, and while work will be carried out under traffic control during the day, on most occasions two-way traffic flow will resume after hours. Motorists are asked to observe all roadworks signage, speed restrictions and directions from ground crews, and to travel with caution through the area.

Along with a new section of road that will cater for local traffic for years to come, the outcome will include safer areas alongside the road for motorists to pull off when necessary.
