WASHINGTON - Senator John Hoeven today met with former Texas Governor Rick Perry, who has been nominated to serve as Secretary of the U.S Department of Energy (DOE). Hoeven highlighted North Dakota's energy leadership and the importance of reducing the regulatory burden on the nation's job creators and empowering energy development. The senator also invited Perry to North Dakota to see firsthand the state's efforts to develop both traditional and renewable energy, and work being done at the University of North Dakota's Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC).
'Governor Perry and I worked together on energy issues for more than a decade as governors of two leading energy states. We have a good working relationship and believe in developing all of our nation's resources,' said Hoeven. 'Today, we discussed the importance of empowering energy development and ensuring that we have a true, all-of-the-above energy policy for our nation. Governor Perry will be good for our nation and good for North Dakota.'
Hoeven and Perry discussed a wide range of energy issues from traditional to renewable energy, as well as the need to build infrastructure to safely and efficiently transport energy.
The senator also outlined his efforts with the Department of Energy, including:
• Advancing clean coal technologies, including Project Tundra, to retrofit existing power plants for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), the Allam Cycle Demonstration Project, which uses new CO2 technologies for new power plants, and DOE's Cooperative Agreements with EERC to take CCS out of the lab and into the field.
• Oil and Gas Development, including research to develop oil and gas and provide regulatory certainty for companies that use captured carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery. Using captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery produces more oil from existing wells.
• Improving Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Export Permitting by requiring the Energy Secretary to make a final decision on LNG export applications no more than 45 days after an environmental review for a project is published.
Hoeven is a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, which will consider Perry's nomination in the coming weeks.
