DUBLIN, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Ireland will likely run a budget deficit lower than the 3.4% of economic activity forecast for 2022 if the current COVID-19 wave recedes relatively quickly, the finance ministry's chief economist, John McCarthy, said on Wednesday.

McCarthy added that he expected corporate tax receipts to increase again this year from the record level recorded in 2021 before international reforms into how large multinationals are taxed kick in in 2023.

Ireland ran a lower-than-expected 2021 budget deficit of around 4% of modified gross national income due to a surge in tax receipts, including a record haul from the corporate sector, the finance ministry estimated on Wednesday. (Reporting by Padraic Halpin; Editing by Alex Richardson)
