€930bn paid in claims in 2011

The European insurance sector paid a total of €930bn in claims to its customers in 2011, according to Insurance Europe's latest annual "European Insurance in Figures" report.

Life insurance benefits, which account for two thirds of the total benefits and claims paid to policyholders, totalled €619bn, while non-life claims paid (including health benefits) amounted to €310bn. This corresponds to a 7.5% increase on 2010, despite the challenging economic conditions and total premiums declining by 3.2% to €1 072bn. The investment portfolio of Europe's insurers grew by 2.6% to €7 740bn in 2011.
