WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The board of directors of the National Press Foundation has awarded George Stephanopoulos, the chief anchor for ABC News, the Sol Taishoff Excellence in Broadcast Journalism Award. The award will be presented at NPF's annual awards dinner on Feb. 18 in Washington, D.C.
"George Stephanopoulos has demonstrated extraordinary energy and insight for many years in covering news, politics and current affairs, including his recent exclusive interview with the policeman at the heart of the events in Ferguson, Missouri," said Sandy K. Johnson, president and COO of the National Press Foundation.
Stephanopoulos is the anchor of ABC News' Good Morning America and Sunday morning This Week.
NPF created the Sol Taishoff Award in 1983 to honor the founder and publisher of Broadcasting Magazine (now Broadcasting & Cable). Mr. Taishoff was a strong advocate of unrestricted speech for broadcast journalists. Previous recipients have included: Wolf Blitzer, Tim Russert, Andrea Mitchell, Bob Schieffer, Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, David Brinkley and John Chancellor.
The National Press Foundation is an independent non-profit that is run by and for journalists. Its mission is to educate practicing journalists about today's most pressing issues, as well as train new entrants into our profession in critical areas such as ethics and practices.
The awards will be presented at NPF's 32(nd) annual awards dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Approximately 1,000 print and broadcast journalists and Washington policy makers attend the awards dinner. This event is often streamed live on the Internet and covered by C-SPAN. The net proceeds support NPF's educational activities.
