Frostbite the polar bear has been crowd pleaser at the Securian Winter Run for more than 10 years.

“The Securian Winter Run is quite an achievement for the hardy folks who brave our January temperatures to stay physically active and support the Winter Carnival,” said Lori Koutsky, manager, Community Relations and Securian Foundation, Securian Financial Group. “Frostbite symbolizes their feat.”

He doesn’t talk (or growl), but Frostbite enthusiastically hugs, bumps fists and dances with runners and walkers who register for the 5K, 10K and half marathon.

His mug on the mug
See Frostbite’s photos from previous Securian Winter Run races on his Facebook page along with this year’s mug and t-shirt designs featuring Frostbite’s own grinning mug. Everyone is encouraged to share their own photos on his page.

“Frostbite is at the heart of the Securian Winter Run and we think our runners and walkers will like seeing him at the heart of our promotions as well,” said Koutsky.

Frostbite added his own gift to the bag handed out at the end of the race. Runners and walkers get a hat just like his, complete with tassels and ear flaps and perfect for enjoying the rest of the Winter Carnival.

A well-run run
In addition to high fives from Frostbite, participants can count on consistency with the Securian Winter Run. Each year, the run provides smiling volunteers, a huge “warming house” inside Securian’s 400 and 401 building plazas, free food, hot drinks, giveaways, and a free hot shower afterward at the YMCA next door. There’s also a safe place to stash stuff while out on the course. Find all the details on the registration form at www.securianwinterrun.com.

The half marathon starts at 9:00 AM at Sixth and Jackson in downtown St. Paul, followed in five-minute intervals by the 5K and 10K. The course is unchanged from last year, winding through downtown and over to the Mississippi with clearly marked turn-arounds on Shepard Road for each event.
