Commission proposes €1.3 million from Globalisation Fund for former workers of Saint-Gobain Sekurit Benelux in Belgium 21/01/2015

The European Commission has proposed to provide Belgium with € 1.3 million from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to help 257 former workers of Saint-Gobain Sekurit Benelux to find new jobs.

The proposal now goes to the European Parliament and the EU's Council of Ministers for approval. The territory concerned by the redundancies is the province of Namur in the Walloon region, and in particular the Basse-Sambre employment area.

Belgium applied for support from the EGF following the dismissal of 257 workers in Saint-Gobain Sekurit Benelux. These job losses were the result of major structural changes in world trade patterns due to globalisation, in particular the EU's declining market share in the production of automotive safety glass.

The measures co-financed by the EGF would help all the 257 redundant workers to find new jobs by providing them with active career guidance, job-search support, vocational training, promotion of entrepreneurship and contributions to collective projects. Hiring incentives and a relocation allowance for the workers who accept a job which implies a change of residence are also foreseen.

The total estimated cost of the package is €2.6 million, of which the EGF would provide half.
