The California Department of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) has announced that April 13, 2019 will be the date of the next QME Competency Exam. QMEs are doctors certified by the DWC who examine injured workers in order to determine contested medical issues in a Workers’ Compensation claim. QMEs play a vital role in the Workers’ Compensation system to aid in the adjudication of claims as well as to reduce fraud, waste and abuse.

The DWC is seeking physicians who are licensed to practice medicine in California to become QMEs. With the growing demand outpacing physician supply, now is the ideal time for physicians interested in med-legal work to consider taking the upcoming exam and become a QME. Although most provider specialties are eligible to become QMEs, based on current data, the following physician specialties are in highest demand: Dermatology, Pain Medicine, Otolaryngology (ENT), Gastroenterology (GI), Orthopedic Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Psychiatry. The deadline to register for the April 2019 exam is February 28, 2019.

For those physicians considering a career as a med-legal expert, California Medical Evaluators offers a unique QME Starter Program that is specifically designed for newly appointed QMEs. The program offers knowledge, education and mentorship to help guide physicians. Our QME expert team will be with you every step of the way to help you launch a successful QME practice.
