The project cost is about $1.8 million and is important to complete before the new urea facility begins operation.

The Dakota Gasificiation Company board of directors approved a project to replace the ammonia plant methanator reactor at its December 2016 meeting.

Great Plains Synfuels Plant Manager Dale Johnson told directors the 50-year-old methanator is the original piece of equipment.

'The new methanator will feature upgraded metallurgy to reduce the chance of failure or cracks,' Johnson said.

The new vessel will be ordered in January, with delivery expected in time for a September turnaround for installation. The existing methanator, platforms, and piping will be removed and the damaged concrete repaired. The new methanator, piping, platforms, insulation and electrical components will be installed and back in operation by fall 2017.

The project cost is about $1.8 million and is important to complete before the new urea facility begins operation, Johnson said.
