TIMONIUM, Md., Jan. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of CurePSP has announced the appointment of David Kemp as President effective immediately. He succeeds Richard Gordon Zyne, MS, DMin, who has retired after 10 years leading the organization.

The leadership change marks CurePSP's expanding role in funding research and increasing public awareness of the broader spectrum of rare neurodegenerative diseases, including PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy) and CBD (corticobasal degeneration). CurePSP will continue to maintain and enhance its services and support for patients, their families, and other caregivers.

The announcement was made by Board Chair John T. Burhoe and Vice-Chair Everett R. Cook. According to Mr. Burhoe, "Since its founding 25 years ago, CurePSP has been a leader in supporting research into the rare neurodegenerative diseases PSP and CBD and in providing support and education to patients, their families, other caregivers, and healthcare professionals. We appreciate the leadership of Dr. Zyne in these efforts over the last 10 years."

"We are confident that we are on the cusp of even greater opportunities with exciting new developments in research into neurodegeneration," Mr. Cook added. "To take full advantage of these possibilities in today's competitive nonprofit arena requires an organization that is managed as a high-performing business enterprise with a focus on developing new sources of funding and creating broader awareness of PSP, CBD, and other less-common but devastating neurodegenerative diseases."

Mr. Kemp was most recently Chief Executive and owner of Jager Di Paola Kemp Design (JDK), a leading design and marketing firm working for prominent consumer-products brands. Earlier in his career, he was Chief Executive and owner of Harmon Kemp, Inc., a New York corporate-graphics firm; Manager of Public Relations for Dow Jones & Co. in New York; and a reporter, columnist, and editor with several publications including The Boston Globe. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business.

Mr. Kemp said, "I am honored and excited to lead our terrific CurePSP team at a time when there is tremendous energy and optimism in the field of research into neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, CurePSP's inquiry into the rarer neurodegenerative disorders, less known to the public than Alzheimer's disease for example, will yield tremendous return on resources invested. What is learned from research into PSP in particular may unlock the secrets of many other neurodegenerative diseases."

CurePSP was founded in Baltimore in 1990 as the Society for PSP by several PSP patients and their families and later changed its name. CurePSP has become the foremost nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of PSP, CBD, and other rare neurodegenerative disorders; funding research toward treatment, cure and prevention; educating healthcare professionals; and providing support, information, and hope for affected persons and their families.
