PHOENIX, Jan. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A judge's recent ruling found that there were major problems with blood testing equipment at the Scottsdale Crime Lab (KTVK 3, Scottsdale Crime Lab's faulty machine at center of court battle). The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is now appealing this ruling.

The machine in question was used to test the blood alcohol concentration of thousands of individuals arrested for DUI. The attorneys responsible for discovering the machine's flaw believe that this case effectively disclosed other errors and oversights at Scottsdale's lab.

When asked how many cases were likely processed through the faulty machine, Attorney Craig Rosenstein stated, "Probably north of ten thousand."

The blood test machine was first called into question when attorneys brought challenges against 11 DUI cases. Evidence brought forth in the trial included statements from crime lab staff describing the machine as a "malfunctioning instrument" and a "problem instrument." According to court documents, attorneys even submitted a work order as evidence which indicated that the machine had needed repairs since 2010.

Rosenstein continued, "People accused of a crime were having their blood tested on a broken machine that entire time."

When asked about the blood test machine at trial, one crime lab technician said that it was their belief that the machine has "worked properly and that the results are reliable." The judge believed that there was a major discrepancy in the crime lab's testimony and ultimately ruled that there were major problems with the Scottsdale Crime Lab's blood testing machine.

According to Rosenstein, this situation "certainly calls into question [the crime lab's] credibility."
