Shares of retailers and other consumer companies rose in anticipation of another round of fiscal stimulus.

Unemployment data highlighted the ongoing crisis in the labor market inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic. But investors responded to the dire statistics by doubling down on stimulus bets.

The number of jobless claims last week was down slightly from the week ended Jan. 9, when applications jumped by more than 100,000 to 926,000.
