According to the Bank of Russia estimates, the amount of external debt of the Russian Federation as of 1st January 2017 reached $518.7 billion generally remaining on the previous year level with a slight increase of $0.2 billion. At the same time the contribution to the dynamics of external debt has been different among the sectors of the Russian economy. The external debt of the Russian banking sector has diminished by $12.5 billion, the share of banks in the external debt structure has slightly decreased to 23.0% compared with 25.4% in the previous year. Оn the contrary, the external debt of the government sector due to new debt issues and the purchases of sovereign debt instruments by non-residents on the secondary market has risen by $6.9 billion and its position in the external debt structure has gone up from 5.9% to 7.2% during the previous year. Оther sectors of the Russian economy have retained the leading positions in the external debt amount (their share accounted for 67.7% as of 1st January 2017), their outstanding indebtedness has increased by $5.9 billion in comparison with the previous year.
