Fruits trees thrive in Marin County, but some varieties produce more delicious fruit than others. This class will focus on the best fruit trees to plant today in the microclimate of southern Marin - taking into account soils, pollination, pests, and disease - in order to create your very own food forest. Participants will also learn about historical southern Marin varieties, including native fruits and those that were characteristic of the Mission and Gold Rush eras of California history.

This class will be taught by John Valenzuela, a Novato-based horticulturist, consultant, and educator - but, above all, a fruit enthusiast, devoted to the sustainable cultivation of edible plants. Formerly the chair of the Golden Gate Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers, John currently teaches and volunteers at the Indian Valley Organic Farm and Garden orchard and fruit tree nursery..
