NEW YORK, Jan. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A world-leading innovator in multifamily housing architecture, planning and interior design, CetraRuddy has announced a newly sponsored architectural studio course to benefit a major East Coast university architecture program. The first of its kind for the school, this major gift -- and the five-semester-long housing design and research initiative conceived with faculty and leaders at the City College of New York -- all serve to underscore CetraRuddy's commitment to advancing residential architecture and urban design for housing.

The new initiative, called "CetraRuddy Design Studio in Housing: Exploring New and Established Modes of Living and the Meanings of Home," will be part of the Masters of Architecture program at The City College of New York's Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture beginning in January 2017. Going beyond the university's classrooms, the housing design studio for Master of Architecture candidates will also create and publish new housing research. Students and faculty will present the results publicly in an exhibition and an academic symposium, as well as through publications, a blog, and housing workshops. In addition, CetraRuddy's gift includes internship placements for selected students.

"We are extremely excited about this collaboration. The CetraRuddy Design Studio in Housing makes a direct impact on the Spitzer School of Architecture by bridging academia and practice together in a meaningful way, and enhancing the education and professional development of students," says Gordon A. Gebert, interim dean at the City College of New York (CCNY) Spitzer School of Architecture.

Known worldwide for its innovative contributions to urban multifamily architecture and community buildings in the United States and overseas, CetraRuddy is the architecture firm behind such acclaimed works as One Madison, Walker Tower, 242 West 53(rd) Street, 443 Greenwich and the Barbizon, among many others. With the Spitzer School housing studio, the firm's leaders seek to expand the critical focus on urban residential solutions across the United States. "We are energized and eager to begin our partnership with the City College of New York, where its architecture program has a long tradition of commitment to urban challenges like housing, which ultimately help create a just, sustainable, and imaginative future for all," says John Cetra, AIA, founding principal and leader of multifamily architecture for CetraRuddy.

The selection of the Spitzer School resonates with deep meaning for Cetra and the firm's cofounder, Nancy J. Ruddy. Both attended the CCNY's School of Architecture and remain ardent supporters of the 420-student architecture program, the only such public program in New York City. Ruddy and Cetra serve on its Dean's Advisory Board, and they were honored in 2009 with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Spitzer School. "We are excited about the opportunities to dialogue with students and the university's highly accomplished faculty on the development of housing research and design solutions led by our next generation of architects," says Ruddy, who looks forward to mentoring students, especially women, in a historically male-dominated profession.

Conceived by Cetra and Ruddy in 2016, the CetraRuddy Design Studio in Housing extends for five semesters beginning with the spring 2017 session. The faculty leaders for the project are Bradley Horn, an associate professor and director of the Masters of Architecture Program, along with the associate professors June Williamson and Fabian Llonch.

Established in 1987, CetraRuddy is an international award-winning architecture, planning and interior design firm known for design excellence and creating one-of-a-kind architectural experiences. cetraruddy.com
