Interested participants have until 26 January 2018 to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations at the Second Technical Meeting on Radiation Detection Instruments for Nuclear Security, to be held in Vienna, Austria, from 16 to 20 April 2018.

The meeting is part of a series of Technical Meetings to enable the sharing of experiences related to radiation detection equipment, which is used to detect nuclear and other radioactive material out of regulatory control or to provide nuclear security at major public events.

Radiation detection instrument experts, users and manufacturers will take part in the April meeting, which forms part of the Agency's work in response to the Nuclear Security Plan 2018-2021 that underlined the importance of 'keeping pace with evolving challenges and threats to nuclear security using scientific and technological innovations.'

'This meeting provides an excellent opportunity to bring together the users of radiation detection instruments with the manufacturers of those instruments in order to discuss the challenges and solutions to using the instruments for nuclear security applications,' said Charles Massey, Scientific Secretary for the Technical Meeting.

The Technical Meeting will cover topics such as detection systems for mail and air cargo, active neutron interrogation and detection systems, challenges stemming from calibration maintenance, cross-border compatibility for detection systems, technical and functional specifications, as well as research and development opportunities.

The IAEA welcomes abstracts on all meeting topics, Massey said.

Representatives from 53 Member States and more than 30 radiation detection manufacturers took part in the first IAEA Technical Meeting on Radiation Detection Instruments for Nuclear Security, held in April 2016 in Vienna.

Further information about the meeting and abstract submission is available on the meeting webpage.
