Laurimed LLC today announced that the company’s PolypVac® Microdebrider for removing nasal polyps has appeared on the popular television program “The Doctors”, distributed nationally by CBS. Jivianne Lee, M.D., ENT-otolaryngologist in Irvine, Calif., demonstrated the use of PolypVac for nasal polyp removal in a patient suffering from polyposis in a studio segment airing today.

Millions of Americans – up to four percent of the population – have nasal polyposis, also called nasal polyps. Nasal polyps are benign growths in the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses that can cause breathing problems, loss of sense of smell and taste, difficulty sleeping, runny nose, and frequent infections. Polyp removal, a proven treatment for polyposis, relieves symptoms by immediately improving airflow through the nasal passages. There is no known permanent cure and for most patients polyposis is a recurrent condition.

The FDA-cleared PolypVac is an innovative hand-held device that quickly, easily, and virtually painlessly removes polyps blocking the nasal passages during a routine physician office visit. Polyp removal is performed using a local anesthetic and typically takes just a few minutes to treat both sides of the nose. The treatment provides an alternative to older, more invasive techniques for polyp removal in the operating room and allows many patients to avoid oral steroids, which can have serious side effects. Clinical experience demonstrates that patients tolerate the procedure very well. The cost-effective technology is uniquely powered by suction already available in doctors’ offices, is easily set up, requires no batteries and no electricity, and is completely disposable.

“We are thrilled that this appearance on ‘The Doctors’ will educate many patients who may be needlessly suffering from nasal polyps about this new treatment alternative, ” said Jeffrey A. Saal, M.D., co-founder, Laurimed. “The commercial launch last fall has exceeded expectations, and we are excited to bring PolypVac technology to additional U.S. ENT specialists and polyposis patients this year.”
