STORY: On Saturday, thousands continued the protest by launching an indefinite strike in the major agriculture export hub, with video showing highways blocked, empty streets and markets and businesses closed. Police reported one death in clashes between people who accepted the strike and those who wanted to reject it.
Federal and state officials met to discuss the situation, while lawmakers called for calm and agreed to continue talks until an agreement is reached that can stop the indefinite strike.
About 3.3 million of Bolivia's 12 million inhabitants live in Santa Cruz, which is considered the bastion of the Bolivian economy and the main livestock and agricultural producer, known for production of soybeans, sunflowers, sugar cane, corn, rice and wheat.
