Bartell Drugs announced today that Brian Unmacht has been named President of the family-owned, 63-store chain. The former REI Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer has served as a member of Bartell Drugs’ board of directors since 2011.

Bartell Drugs’ Chairman and CEO George D. Bartell said that filling the position at the family-owned company supports future succession plans as it celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2015. Bartell Drugs is the oldest and largest family-owned drugstore chain in the U.S.

“Brian is an accomplished leader, with a great track record of success. He brings an excellent mix of leadership, operational experience, technical breadth, and passion for exceptional guest service,” said Bartell. “Our senior leadership team has never been stronger, and Brian will play a key role in our long range planning and growth.”

Bartell said Unmacht’s dedication to customer service during his 27-year career at REI is an ideal match for Bartell Drugs’ core values. “His experience helping profitably grow REI will be a great asset,” said Bartell.

“I am excited to start a new chapter of my career at Bartell Drugs. Growing up in Seattle, it represents a brand that I greatly admire,” said Unmacht. “I respect the commitment of Bartell employees to serving our guests, and the role our stores play in serving the health and wellness needs of the neighborhoods we serve.”

Founded in 1890, Bartell Drugs remains a family-owned business. George D. Bartell is only the third member of the family to head the company, and Jean Bartell Barber is the company’s vice chairman and treasurer. Members of the fourth generation are engaged in the succession transition, including Evelyn (Evie) Barber, who is re-joining the organization upon completion of graduate school. Other members of the family are spending time learning about the company’s operations during the company’s milestone 125th anniversary.
