The report segments the global water purifier market into three different types of products. They are:

  • RO water purifiers
  • Gravity-based water purifiers
  • UV water purifiers

Global RO water purifier market

The RO water purifier segment dominates the global water purifier market with more than 46% of the market share and is to likely record high growth in the forecast period. While the volume sales of the RO water purifier segment are lower than the other segments, it has a higher market share in terms of revenue as the products are in a higher price range. RO based water purifiers are high-end products and primarily target urban consumers. As the urbanization rate is increasing in countries like India and China, the segment is expected to grow, especially in APAC.

Technavio’s lead analyst from the home, kitchen, and large appliances sector, Jhansi Mary J, says, “The growing health consciousness among consumers, rigorous marketing initiatives by vendors, and the growing need for safe drinking water are major factors that are likely to drive the RO water purifiers segment over the next five years, thus leading to the overall market growth.”

Global gravity-based water purifier market

Technavio analysts predict the global gravity-based water purifier market to grow at a consistent pace due to the advantages of these products over RO and UV water purifiers, posting a CAGR of over 8% during the forecast period. The low price of gravity water purifiers has led to their high adoption, especially in rural areas. Also, these purifiers do not need electricity to function, which makes them suitable for areas with irregular or scarce electric supply.

“Advances in technology such as space nanotechnology have led to an increased demand for gravity-based water purifiers. For instance, in 2014, Eureka Forbes launched Aquaguard-on-the-Go, a mobile water purifier at a very reasonable price. With the growing incidence of waterborne diseases in the world, consumers are becoming more conscious about the importance of contaminant-free drinking water,” says Jhansi.

Global UV water purifier market

The UV water purifier market has the smallest market share in the global water purifier market, with close to 25% of the market in 2015. This segment is growing at a slow rate because UV water purifiers are not as effective as RO water purifiers in removing microorganisms, chlorine, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and heavy chemicals. They have more limitations and drawbacks compared to RO water purifiers, which are effective against all types of contaminants.

These disadvantages have made the vendors focus on coming up with better innovations to cater to residential consumers. Therefore, the UV water purifier market is forecast to strengthen during the forecast period, with majority of the demand emerging from middle-income households.

Technavio analysts also highlight the following vendors as the top leading vendors of the global water purifier market:

  • Amway
  • Eureka Forbes
  • Hindustan Unilever
  • LG
  • Panasonic
  • Philips
  • Whirlpool
