Statement from Worthing Borough Council:

Worthing Borough Council's Planning Committee voted to refuse retrospective permission for Unit 6 at Northbrook Trading Estate to be used as a martial arts and fitness studio, in order to protect the valuable business premises.

Chair of the Worthing Planning Committee, Cllr Kevin Jenkins, commented:

'It's disappointing to see another example of where an industrial unit has been occupied and the applicants have not checked whether planning permission is required prior to occupying the building. This causes unnecessary cost in terms of time and expenditure for both the applicant and Council.'

'As a Council we have clearly set out our policy in seeking to secure these sites for industrial / commercial use. Our Local Plan recognises the importance of maintaining these valuable business spaces, to protect jobs, to support local industry to grow and ensure we have a thriving local economy. There's currently high interest for facilities like this in Worthing. Based on this policy we have rejected the application for a change of use of the premises and have requested that the occupiers relocate and restore the unit to its original purpose within the next 6 months.'

'The Councils' Economic Development team will be available to provide advice to the applicants in finding an alternative location to operate from.'
