FLORENCE, SC, January 25, 2017 - The Steel Joist Institute (SJI) is excited to kick off its 2017 webinar series with the first webinar 'Building Design - The Intelligent Approach' featuring special guest speaker, Dr. James M. Fisher, Vice President Emeritus of Computerized Structural Design. It is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. (EST), followed by a 15-minute Q&A session.

The purpose of this webinar is to inform engineers how to frame buildings so the most cost-effective structure is achieved. Steps that the engineer can take to arrive at the most cost-effective structure and the need to think about the 'big picture' when determining potential design problems and their solutions will be discussed.

Learning objectives for this course include selecting the serviceability criteria for the horizontal framing members, selecting the lateral drift criteria, selecting the structural system (i.e. braced frames, moment frames, shear walls), determining the type of connections to use, designing connections or establishing their design criteria, checking that the design has been correctly transferred onto the construction documents, and project specifications.

Dr. Fisher is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC); the ASCE/SEI 7 Standards Committee for Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures; the ASCE Committee on the Design of Steel Building Structures; and an Emeritus member of the American Iron and Steel Institute Committee on Specifications. Dr. Fisher currently serves as the Consulting Engineer for the Steel Joist Institute. He has authored many technical papers and Design Guides for both AISC and SJI. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and the University of Illinois, where he received his PhD.

Individual and site registration is now available online at steeljoist.org/febwebinar. Individual registration cost is $75. Each person who registers will receive his or her own link to the webinar and earn 0.15 CEUs or 1.5 PDHs and receive a certificate of completion from SJI. Site registration is also available for $300, allowing multiple attendees from the same company to utilize one link to the webinar.

Besides setting standards for the steel joist industry, the Steel Joist Institute works closely with major building code bodies throughout the country helping to develop code regulations regarding steel joists and Joist Girders. The Institute also invests thousands of dollars in research related to steel joists and Joist Girders and offers a complete library of publications and other training, research and design aids. The Steel Joist Institute is a not-for-profit organization. For more information, visit www.steeljoist.org or join the Steel Joist LinkedIn group.
