Urges Congress and Administration to Act Quickly in Support of U.S. Jobs and Growth

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) today applauded action by leaders in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to bring forward the updated Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation.  The previous TPA enacted by Congress expired in 2007.

"American equipment manufacturers are encouraged by today's action in Congress to work together and introduce TPA legislation," AEM President Dennis Slater said.  "TPA will further strengthen U.S. manufacturers' ability to compete in world markets and allow Congress to prioritize negotiating objectives important for our industry. I hope today's action is a symbol that Congress and the Administration can work together to quickly get this legislation enacted."

TPA is necessary for Congress to establish negotiating objectives and preserve Congress' authority to approve trade agreements.  Concluding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) - key trade agreements crucial to the equipment manufacturing industry - depend upon successful passage of TPA.
