In a letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission that was reviewed by Reuters, four Democratic U.S. representatives asked the regulator to investigate Musk to see if he committed securities fraud by allegedly misleading investors about the safety of a brain implant that Neuralink is developing.

Musk's company aims to help patients overcome paralysis and a host of neurological conditions and is preparing to test the implant on humans.

The letter says records obtained from Neuralink show monkeys involved in its experiments suffered debilitating health effects from the implants and some were euthanized because of this.

It adds that Musk downplayed investor concerns about the testing and said no monkey died as a result of the implants which may have violated SEC rules.

Neuralink did not respond to requests for comment on the letter to the SEC.
