Nokia announced on Wednesday that it has deployed a new 'standalone' 5G network core for German operator O2 Telefonica.

With the commissioning of this 'cloud' network hosted at Amazon Web Services (AWS), O2 Telefonica will have a very low-latency mobile network that will enable it to offer advanced 5G services such as extended reality or 'slicing'.

The latter involves virtually slicing the network into 'slices' with different characteristics or prioritization levels.

"With this new cloud-based 5G network core, we are abandoning traditional architectures to focus on modern, high-performance and efficient technologies", explained O2 Telefonica.

With 107 operator customers, Nokia claims to occupy the world leadership position in 'standalone' 5G, i.e. 5G running on its own, without the need to rely on existing 4G infrastructures.
