BMW announced last Friday that it had begun construction of its new battery assembly line in San Luis Potosi, in central Mexico.

The project, which is to involve an investment of 800 million euros via the addition of 20,000 m2 of additional floor space, is dedicated to the local production of batteries for vehicles based on the new-generation technology platform, the 'Neue Klasse', which will be effective from next year.

The automaker points out that it plans to set up a total of five assembly sites worldwide for its sixth-generation high-voltage batteries, in Mexico, Hungary, China, the USA and Germany.

These new-generation batteries are expected to shorten recharge times by 30%, while extending vehicle range by 30%.

BMW currently employs 3,700 people at its San Luis Potosi plant, manufacturing its 3 Series Sedan, 2 Series Coupé and M2 models, all of which are destined for the global market.
