Rio Tinto announces that its Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) has won the 'Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM)' Environmental Excellence Award for its contributions to the Partnership for the Restoration of Abandoned Sites: Cleaning up Nitassinan.

This initiative focuses on the rehabilitation of former outfitters and dumpsites in Nitassinan, an ancestral territory of the Innu nation of Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam.

Rio Tinto specifies that the degradation of this territory is not related to IOC's activities, and adds that the objective of the project is to restore the territory to its original state.

In concrete terms, this will involve the safe and efficient removal and relocation of materials, demonstrating IOC's commitment to environmental care and collaboration with communities by using their resources to support sustainable development initiatives beyond its usual operations.
