TERNA: PROCESS TO APPROVE ELECTRICITY GRID

STREAMLINING PROJECT IN VALLE DEL PIAVE REVIVED

149 million euros investment

Over 25 km of new underground power lines and 71 km overhead lines will be built,

allowing 100 km of existing overhead power lines to be demolished - a total of 390 pylons

that currently interfere with the surrounding towns

The works will increase the grid's resilience during extreme weather events and allow for

full use of local hydroelectric production

Rome, 18 June 2024 - The Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has revived the project to streamline the electricity grid in the Valle del Piave, outside Belluno, following the conclusion in favour of the Environmental Impact Assessment and the procedure to implement the indications contained in the Environmental Compatibility Decree into Terna's project.

The company led by Giuseppina Di Foggia will invest 149 million euros in the project, which will involve the demolition of approximately 100 km of overhead lines, for a total of 390 pylons. These will be replaced by over 25 km of underground power lines, including the crossing of the Municipality of Ponte nelle Alpi, and 71 km of overhead lines. A new 220 kV section will also be built inside the existing 132 kV Polpet electrical substation, connected to the current 220 kV power lines of the Soverzene grid node.

The grid restructuring will involve the municipalities of Belluno, Ponte nelle Alpi, Soverzene, Longarone, Ospitale di Cadore and Perarolo di Cadore and, thanks to the vast demolition plan, will make it possible to move the new infrastructure further away from the towns without limiting the potential of Belluno Airport.

The works will allow for improved reliability and quality of service, while increasing grid resilience and ensuring greater reliability in the face of extreme weather events. The project will also ensure full use of energy production from the hydroelectric power substations in the Alto Bellunese, even under incomplete grid conditions.

The main amendments to the original project following negotiations between Terna and the Veneto Region and the local area include: a modification in the Municipality of Perarolo (Val Montina) on the Polpet-Lienz line to move it further away from a traditional cheese maturation hut; a modification straddling the Municipalities of Ospitale and Longarone to keep the Polpet-Lienz line on the hydrographic right of the Piave; the crossing of the Piave river of the Polpet-Vellai and Polpet-Scorzè lines in a single underground corridor.

Citizens, notably the owners of the plots of land affected by the project, can view the project at the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and the Municipal Town Halls of Belluno, Ponte nelle Alpi, Soverzene, Longarone, Ospitale di Cadore, and Perarolo di Cadore. Written comments can also be sent within 30 days of publication of the notice to the aforesaid Ministry and Terna (for information).
