ArcelorMittal announces that its Spanish subsidiary, ArcelorMittal Asturias, has signed a contract with the industrial engineering company Sarralle for the construction of a new electric arc furnace (EAF) in Gijón, as part of the company's decarbonization plan in Spain.

Civil engineering work on the site will start early next year.

Once the new 1.1 million tonne capacity EAF is operational - expected in the last quarter of 2025 - the site will be able to switch to the production of low-carbon steel for the long products sector, in particular rails and wire rod.

According to Arcelor, this will 'make the site highly competitive, particularly for sectors subject to strict carbon criteria for public procurement'. At present, these products are manufactured via the blast furnaces.

The project is part of ArcelorMittal Europe's commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030.
