Most burn injuries happen at home. Learn how to protect yourself and your children with tips from Parkland's Regional Burn Center.

Bath safety

  • Set your water heater to 120 degrees F or just below the medium setting
  • Run your hand through the bath water to test for hot spots
  • Never leave young children in the bathroom or tub alone

Kitchen safety

  • Use the back burners on the stove
  • Turn all pot handles to the back so children cannot reach them
  • Always use oven mitts when cooking or handling hot food
  • Keep coffee, tea and other hot drinks away from the edges of tables and counters
  • Keep cords from slow cookers and other machines in a place where kids cannot touch them
  • Never carry a child while holding hot drinks
  • Help children take food out from a microwave

Parkland's Burn Center cares for adults and children with all types of burn injuries.
