WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) released the following statement opposing today's Trump Administration plans to allow drilling in all U.S. waters:

'I served on the House Natural Resources Committee during the Deepwater Horizon spill, and helped pass new protections to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again. Now, the Trump Administration is proposing a far-fetched plan to dramatically expand offshore drilling that would set the stage for a Deepwater-scale catastrophe off New Hampshire's beautiful Seacoast. This proposal puts New Hampshire's Seacoast communities and our nation's environment at risk. I will fight alongside the seven coastal state Governors, both Republican and Democratic, who have already spoken out against today's proposal to make sure it is firmly rejected.'

BACKGROUND

  • Governors, scientists, fishermen, and the U.S. Navy have joined thousands of citizens and groups in voicing strong opposition to allowing oil and gas drilling on the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf.
  • Oceana, a non-profit conservation group that monitors fisheries and pollution, called today's proposal 'a recipe for disaster.'
  • Offshore drilling was responsible for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.
