:: "In the afternoon, the Prime Minister was taken by air ambulance to the hospital, where he was treated. He underwent a CT scan and was then transported to the operating room, where a 5-hour surgery took place, two operating teams conducted it. The surgical and traumatology patient had multiple gunshot wounds, the consequences of which will affect his recovery. At this point, his condition has stabilised, but it is truly very serious, and therefore he will actually be in the intensive care unit on the premises of the general hospital, where he will be cared for by the team and all the doctors he needs."

Slovakia will convene a state security council meeting and the cabinet will also meet from 11:00 a.m. (0900 GMT) on Thursday, the government office said.

The shooting was the first major assassination attempt on a European political leader for more than 20 years, and spurred international condemnation, with political analysts and lawmakers saying it was indicative of an increasingly febrile and polarized political climate across the continent.
