AtkinsRealis, a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gabriel Castillo as the new Director of ESG & Sustainability for its Minerals and Metals division.

Dr. Castillo will lead the delivery of innovative sustainable solutions that optimize resources, de-risk investments and promote sustainable performance in the face of climate change challenges.

'We must rethink the relationship between mining activities and the environment if we want to reach carbon neutrality. Throughout his career Dr. Castillo has had a proven track record of leading multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with stakeholders to deliver impactful projects that address pressing societal challenges, such as climate change mitigation and resilient infrastructure development within the mining industry. I'm confident that he will help AtkinsRealis lead the charge toward excellence in mining sustainability and better environmental stewardship,' said Cesar Inostroza, CEO, Minerals and Metals at AtkinsRealis.

The mining industry has a pivotal role to play in achieving net zero. To successfully navigate our energy transition, the world will need to ramp up the production of certain metals and minerals like nickel, lithium, graphite, and cobalt by about 450 percent and require nearly twice the volume of copper it has produced in more than three millennia.

Dr. Castillo brings extensive industry and academic expertise with over two decades of experience focusing on implementing sustainable programs across complex operations in the mining and minerals sectors in North and South America, where he has led multidisciplinary teams in conducting social-environmental assessments, strategic executions and ESG initiatives. He earned his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from The University of British Columbia where he developed innovative strategies for climate risk management and ecosystem-based adaptation in mining. Dr. Castillo then transitioned to the consulting sector, working for leading engineering firms where he led corporate strategic sustainability programs. His experience encompasses climate risk management, adaptation strategies, wetlands management, land restoration, social strategies, and sustainable development projects.

Dr. Castillo's mandate will focus on supporting clients in achieving their sustainability goals by providing climate change perspective assessments, impact analysis and adaptation plans. He will advise on the importance of adopting a holistic approach to mining operations that includes sustainable mining processes, corporate risks, collaboration across sectors and the development of innovative infrastructures that minimize environmental footprints.

'The industry needs a greater understanding of the impact of climate change on mining operations. There are sustainable solutions that can be implemented to ensure that our minerals extractions and metal production industry is built in a more sustainable way,' said Gabriel Castillo, Director of ESG & Sustainability, Minerals and Metals at AtkinsRealis. 'I was particularly interested in AtkinsRealis' approach to sustainable mining and their dedication to engineering a better future. And I plan on leveraging my diverse background and expertise to spearhead multifaceted initiatives that integrate cutting-edge technology with sustainable design principles.'

CIM CONNECT 2024

Dr. Castillo will be speaking at the CIM Connect event on May 14th at 2:00 PM at the Vancouver Convention Center. His presentation will explore the role of the mining industry in biodiversity preservation and natural capital integration.
